About us
Juliet & Matthew Maguire are a husband-and-wife team, living and working in London, with a strong connection to the world of journalism. They’ve been running their X/Twitter account since 2013, building up a devoted following.
Our story
Juliet and Matthew Maguire jointly run Second Mentions, a social media account dedicated to celebrating the wonderful descriptive ability of the world’s journalists. Juliet has worked in news since 2008, as a reporter and editor at university, local and national newspapers. Her husband, Matthew, has worked in sport for more than 15 years. Both share a passion for finding examples of elegant variation in global media, and they have built up a dedicated following on social media over the past 10 years. Juliet’s favourite second mentions include “the cod digits” and “the porcine-poultry hybrid”, aka fish fingers and sausage rolls, while Matthew loves it any time a pig is referred to as a “porker”.
